Christmas Ditty

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat

Please put a penny in the old man's hat

If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do

If you haven't got a ha'penny, then God bless you!

When I was young we used to chant this, often when playing hopscotch. Never gave the actual meaning of the words a second thought. Looking at it now I believe it covers the spirit behind Christmas - not the religious meaning but the warm, fuzzy, inside feeling. 

I believe this means if you can, please think of and give to those less fortunate at this festive time of the year. If your circumstances prevent you from giving to others, then may God bless you. Such simple words, but with a wealth of meaning behind them.
