Down Under Fantasy Realms

PRE ORDER NOW

Gathered here together are twenty fantastic stories by seven fabulous Antipodean authors – authors you may not be familiar with … yet; authors you will want to read again and again.

High fantasy and low, magical realism, retold fairy stories, and even a hint of science-fiction – it's all here.

Some stories in this collection are excerpts, others are background or spin-off stories about characters in pre-existing novels, yet others are tasters of works-in-progress; the remainder are stand-alone tales.

You will meet star-beings, enchanted amphibians, dimension-traversing private investigators, faerie changelings, mysterious teachers, mercenaries, and cowgirls.

Within these pages, children are born who have a special destiny, and old men relinquish their powers as their journeys come to a close; truths are found and lies are exposed; fears are faced and dreams become reality.

There are links to the authors' websites and social media pages, too, so that when you discover your next favourite writer, you'll know where to find them.

Ghoulies and Ghosties and things that go bump in the night

Over the last few weeks my new releases have centred on ghosts. The books are all for early teenage and possibly 9 to 12 year olds.

The first book is
Spirit Stealer: Ghosts in the Library
In 1908, Fader, a street urchin, takes shelter in the newly opened library to escape the cold winter. Months pass and the book characters emerge as playful phantoms in the nighttime library – all except for the green Spirit Stealer. This evil phantom steals the spirits of children who are accidentally locked in the library at night. Fader has to dodge the Spirit Stealer or his spirit will be taken.
A century later, Tyler is trapped by accident and tries to help a wraith called Amelia who still has half her spirit. Will they succeed in getting rid of the Spirit Stealer? If they do what will happen to the girl with half a spirit?

Available in ebook from Amazon and various other online outlets
Available in paperback from Copy Press, Nelson

The next two are books one and two of a series and both are set in New Zealand:

Fury's Ghost
Fury's family leave the city for a six month visit to rural New Zealand. They stay in an old house belonging to her mother's family, but who is the ghostly figure in a hidden attic room and why is Fury the only one who can see her? She learns the ghost is the spirit of the original owner who has been trapped in the room for one hundred years.
Fury promises to help the spirit lady to end her earthly existence. Problems arise when Fury delves into the past to find the answers she needs.
Available in ebook from Amazon and various other online outlets
Available in paperback from Copy Press, Nelson

Fury's Island
On holiday in Nelson, New Zealand, Fury meets Eion who offers to teach her to paddle board. Immediately attracted to him, she agrees. After basic instruction, he takes her out to Skull Island, a creepy looking rock some distance from the beach. No one has ever discovered a way up to the caves which look like eyes, but Fury finds a secret entrance and convinces Eion they should investigate. Their excitement rises as they discover tunnels and caves hidden beneath the ground, but neither is prepared for the arrival of ghostly pirates bringing their treasure chests to bury in one of the underground caves.
Available in ebook from Amazon and various other online outlets
Available in paperback from Copy Press, Nelson

As a special celebration of these releases
Ghost Bus: Mystery of the Phantom Bus
is available free for an unlimited time.
Jack's family has a new home, a converted bus depot. The original owners of the depot disappeared and the ghost of their last bus appears to take Jack and his sister on a journey to several different places to solve the mystery.
Available in ebook from Amazon
However some readers in some countries may find they are unable to download free from Amazon and if this is the case I suggest downloading from Prolific Works.

Tails

Heart-stopping, tail-dropping adventure from award-winning children’s author WJ Scott.
Sometimes loss is the only thing that saves you.

Last summer during the dreaded hunting season, Kywah lost his tail, his magic, and his value as a silvertail. Now the hunters have returned and he's terrified. Especially when he recognizes Samsa, the very hunter that cut off his tail and ruined his life.
But when the pack becomes trapped in the foothills with no escape, Kywah realises he’s their only hope. Without a tail, he’s worthless to the hunters and their wizard masters. If he can escape, he can find help for his pack. All he has to do is locate the Wise One and retrieve the Deep Magic.
Which would be hard enough even if he still had the magical tail sense his kind are born with. But what choice does he have? If he doesn’t take the risk, his pack will lose everything. And because Kywah knows exactly how that feels, he can’t let it happen.

I woke. Heart beating too fast. Darkness smothering me. The same nightmare.
I shifted and felt the familiar throb of pain along my stub, which always ached when I first awakened. For an instant I tried to fool myself that it had only been a dream, but when I was brave enough to peek, I saw the empty space where my tail should be. Almost four seasons had passed, and I was still unaccustomed to its loss.

‘This is an original, well-written story and deserves its gold status, congratulations.’ BooksGoSocial

‘Will keep young readers glued to the story till the very end.’
Readers’ Favorite 5* Review

Tails Review by Belinda Mellor.
‘Tails’ is a classic ‘hero’s journey’ story, a coming of age adventure for Kywah, a young silvertail on the cusp of maturity, whose hopes for taking his place among his pack’s adult community have seemingly been dashed by the loss of his kind’s most prized asset: his tail. A silvertail’s tail is its connection to its environment and its fellow pack members. Sadly, the magic it contains is not only prized by the creatures but by human magicians, whose power is waning but whose ambition is not.
When fate intervenes and Kywah sets out on a mission to find the deep magic that will protect his pack from hunters eager to earn the wizard’s bounty he finds help and friendship in the most unlikely places, and danger around every corner.

This is a rich and multi-layered story that will appeal to a wide age-range.  Wendy Scott is an exciting author who has a real gift for storytelling and world building and Kywah is a delightful protagonist who will have readers rooting for his success and redemption every step of his arduous journey. The pastel hued world the silvertails inhabit is one that readers will look forward to revisiting in (hopefully) many books to follow.

Steam Mountain - Rak Shoma Series 2

Steam Mountain the second book of the Rak Shoma series will be released on 21st January 2018. Although there is magic in this book, it is also a steampunk novel.
Maevens Ash and Orm continue their search for Ash's parents by riding on a mechanical carriage to Stavmo, a country based on steam. Stavmo is run by a dictator who ordains everyone must have red hair. Those without this color hair, and anyone else who goes against him, vanish into the mines or are thrown into the volcano.
Steam cars, whirlybirds, and small appliances, even guns, are all powered by steam. A huge factory has toxic smoke billowing into the air, and only the rich are able to escape the smell by living on the opposite side of town.

The magical pair make friends with the rebels and try to help them fight for their rights, but in doing so they get separated and place themselves in danger.

Excerpt

Once again, dust covered the floor of the circular room where they landed after teleporting from below. A huge wooden door closed off the entrance.
"How do we open this?" Ash gave it a shove, but the door refused to budge an inch. She tried to examine the other side with her mind, but found the door blocking her. "Orm, I can't sense the other side. We're trapped in here!" Ash felt the panic rising through her body until she thought she might choke. Instant calm flooded over her when Orm patted her arm."I think the walls and door must be lined with metal and we know metal makes it difficult to use magic, although I believe the floor is made of wood or we wouldn't have been able to teleport in from the platform. There's a lever over here. Let's see what it does."This time fear collected into a heavy mass inside her as Orm examined the lever. She hated having unknown things around her. He pulled the lever and she jumped back as the door opened with a hiss and a roar. She glanced at Orm who appeared to be frozen with terror. After a few moments he grabbed her hand and dragged her through the door. They raced up the curved corridor following the outer wall of the circular room, another roaring and hissing came from behind and Ash guessed the door had closed. They'd traveled half way round the outer wall when they came to the base of a stone staircase and stopped."I don't like this place, Orm. The noise of the door opening sounded like a wounded animal. Why do you think it made such a sound?" Ash cast a worried glance over her shoulder.
"It happened when I pulled the lever, so I think it must have been the mechanism of the door. I've never heard anything like it before and I agree, I'm not sure I trust this place. Despite you being able to check if anyone's on the next level, I don't think we should teleport and suddenly appear up there. I believe we should climb the stairs and take a good look around before we reveal ourselves."

Books Update

I've been holidaying in England so have not been writing much. I thought I should bring you up to date with books coming out in the next six months.

The second book in the Rak Shoma series will be released in November. It has a steam punk theme and is called Steam Mountain. It continues the travels of Ash and Orm who are searching for Ash's biological family using magic and a secret carriageway.

Miri's Inheritance was the first of the Village of Shadows contemporary romance series. I hope to bring the second book out in the next few months. It will be set in the same village with a different main character and story. Watch here for any updates on release date.

Fury's Ghost is the first of the Fury series and is in the final stages of editing. I hope to release this one by the end of September. It is suitable for children of 12 plus age group and as the title suggests, it concerns our heroine Fury and the ghost she finds in her new home.

Well folks, chatting to you all will not get the writing done but I hope you keep popping by to see any updates.

If you want to see my books published up to this date, please visit my webpage http://www.sueperkinsauthor.com

Happy writing or reading - whichever you prefer.

Ariel - War 'N' Wit Inc Series by Gail Roughton

No lightning bolt streaked from the sky the day my life as I knew it began to end. There was no warning at all. Nothing. There I was, sitting at my desk, minding my own business, doing my job. My official job title is “legal assistant.” The more exotic sounding title is paralegal. In the old days when folks called jobs what they actually were, the title was “legal secretary.” Me? I answer to any of the above. Or just to Ariel. That's my name. Ariel Anson. And that’s all I was doing, I swear.  Minding my own business in the course of my humdrum day. Doing my job at the century-old, prestigious central Georgia law firm of Baker, Lawson, Abercrombie & Hunter, where the partners walked around in blissful ignorance of the fact the firm is referred to in legal circles as BLAH. All us legal assistants think that's a hoot.

(Excerpt, The Witch)
Yeah, that’s me.  Ariel Anson.  Ariel Anson Garrett nowadays.  See, sometimes the practice of law requires special expertise of the “field” variety, expertise few of the attorneys or staff members have.  Like tracking down folks who don’t much care to be found, serving suits and notices and subpoenas on folks who don’t much care to be served, things like that.  When that happens, we call in the services of the guys—or gals—who do have that expertise.  Usually they’re known as “private investigators” and good ones have a multitude of skills.  On that day when no lightning bolt streaked from the sky, I found myself in need of a good one. And I was in need of a good one down in the southern part of the state in a geographical area outside our usual area of practice, so I didn’t know a name off the top of my head to call.  Like any good little legal secretary, I knew how to find one, though. I placed a few calls to some firms in the area we’d worked with for recommendations.
And if I’d known then what I know now—namely that War-N-Wit, Inc. stood for “Warlock and Witch”, that Chad Garrett, sole owner, proprietor and employee of War-N-Wit, Inc. was the “War” of that outfit on the hunt for his “Wit”, the soul-mate he’d reincarnated with many times over the centuries, and that he’d immediately peg me as said “Wit” when I uttered my first syllable to him over the phone—well, if I’d known all that then, I’d have still done the same damn thing.  I’m not even going to lie about it.
Now don’t get me wrong.  I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday.  I didn’t just throw up my hands and say “Okay! I’m The Witch
.”  But in the end, there’s just no denying the truth.  Not when you realize down deep in your soul that something is the truth.  Thus it was that I traded in my secretarial chair in the hallowed halls of BLAH for on the job training as the “Wit” of War-n-Wit, Inc. Yeah, I married the man.  On a motorcycle in the Tunnel of Love Drive-Thru at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Vegas, if you must know. Now I’m learning all about skip-tracing, process serving, investigating, and bounty-hunting. Among other things.
What other things? Well, as you might imagine, with a name like War-n-Wit, Inc., we’re magnets for clients who need investigative services of a more—well, magical—nature than the general population.  Like Oliver Hedgepath of Resurrection.  The Resurrection Society, based in Savannah, Georgia, to be precise. Hedgepath was a prissy little twerp of a man.  Chad and I disliked him just from talking with him on the phone. And since we’re both what you call telepaths—meaning we don’t read minds, per se, we read people, who they are underneath the masks we all wear for the world—well, that alone made Chad decline his case.  He was persistent, though, actually showed up on our doorstep.  And meeting him set off alarm bells so loud Chad called in outside sources for consultation.
That’s the first time I met Gabriel Smith, affectionately known as “G”.  G’s the head hauncho for an organization Chad referred to simply as “The Guardians”.  They keep an eye on the magic world.  Magic’s very powerful, you see.  And a misuse of magic is a misuse of power.  Anyone who abuses magic risks losing it, any witch or warlock can tell you that.  G thought old Ollie Hedgepath bore watching.  So off we went to Savannah, to check out the Resurrection Society.  That was a blast from the past, for certain sure.  Once we figured out whose past it was a blast from, of course.  And that’s when I first began to wonder about that black cat.  The one I named Micah.  The one who seemed to show up no matter where we were.  Oh, I know, I know.  There’re lots of black cats in the world.  Chad kept telling me the same thing.  But not like Micah.
We took a break after that case.  Well, it was supposed to be a break, anyway.  A trip to Daytona Bike Week. Did I mention Chad was an avid biker? Chad’s an avid biker. Did I mention that magic aside, Chad is very, very good at what he does, the private investigation thing?  Well, there’s a reason for that.  He’s spent his entire adult life in some aspect of law enforcement.  Ex-Miami-Dade PD, ex-Florida Bureau of Investigation.  And a few other “ex-es” not mentioned on his resume.  Including the five years he spent undercover with an outlaw biker gang.  So naturally, a call came in from that “ex” right before we left. Since we were going to be down there anyway, could Chad possibly check around concerning a current undercover operative who’d gone missing in action?  Good thing we brought The Coven
with us.  Because if Chad’s best friend Spike and my little sister Stacy hadn’t been with us, things could have turned out pretty darn badly.  I don’t think Micah and I could have managed that one without them.  Oh, yeah.  Micah was there, too.  We didn’t bring him with us.  Like always, he was just—there!
Something really great happened on that trip, though. Well, beside all of us surviving it, I mean.  Spike and Stacy fell head-over-heels in love.  So very shortly thereafter, Chad and I were winging it back to Vegas, Spike’s home base, for their wedding.  To be held in the Tunnel of Love Drive-Thru at the Little White Wedding Chapel.  It’s sort of a family tradition by now.  And when I say family, I mean family.  My Mom and Dad were there, too.  Mom missed my wedding and okay, that was my fault. She didn’t intend to miss Stacy’s, too. Which was out of this world.  In more ways than one.  Because that’s when I discovered the Guardian’s Council was actually “The Galatic Guardians Council”. Very convoluted organization.  Gabriel Smith heads the MeanStreet, LLC, Division.  Michael Smith heads the FlyingLow, LLC Division. Raphael Smith heads the SassyWings, LLC Division.  C’mon, with names like that I don’t need to draw you a roadmap, do I?  And Micah?  I wasn’t kidding when I told you there was something strange about that cat.  Or when I told you my sister’s wedding was out of this world.
So what’s next?  I’ve got no idea. I don’t go looking for trouble.
Because it always finds us.  Always.

Gail Roughton's spent almost forty years in a law office as a legal secretary/paralegal. During those years, she's raised three children and quite a few attorneys. She kept herself sane by writing books, tossing each completed novel in her closet. She's been cleaning out the closet for the last few years, as well as producing new works never stored there.
